About Westbrook

There are approximately 16,000 people (6,800 households) living in Westbrook, Maine as of the 2000 census. Largely known as a suburb of Portland, Westbrook’s business and downtown district have flourished in recent years as such notable companies as Idexx Laboratories, Olympia Sporting Goods, Acadia Insurance, Allsports Printing, Full Court Press, JobsInTheUS.com and many others are now headquartered in Westbrook.

The city is also home to Sappi Limited, the Westbrook Paper Mill and R&D Center. Formerly known as the S. D. Warren Paper Mill, it was once the city's largest employer and taxpayer, employing over 3,000 people and representing over 50% of the city's tax base. Today the mill specializes in the manufacture of release papers and employs about 300 people.

Westbrook was originally known as Saccarappa (after Saccarappa Falls on the Presumpscot River), and it was a part of Falmouth (now Portland) until 1814, when it was incorporated as Stroudwater. Soon after, the name was changed to Westbrook as a tribute to Colonel Thomas Westbrook, a commander during Dummer's War, and in 1891, Westbrook was incorporated as a city.
